The Israeli Declaration of Independence gives special mention to "Shearit Ha-pletah", the survivors of the Holocaust who, despite difficult circumstances, sought freedom and dignity in the new Jewish State.  We will do a deep reading of this paragraph of the declaration, with interpretations from leading Israeli intellectuals like Haim Gouri and Muki Tzur.  What does this symbolize about Israel's Jewish values today?  And what does it teach us about African asylum seekers living in Israel now?
